Now you can create your own beautiful paper flower backdrops with this easy short how-to video! This guide was created specifically for my Aura paper petal template (available in my Etsy Shop here ) but can be easily applied on any other petals of your choice.

Paper flowers are amazing, long lasting and versatile decoration that fits almost any event. They became very popular for bedroom, living room and nursery wall art.

This template is suitable for both beginners and more advanced crafters – don’t be afraid to experiment and try out different petal layouts!

Materials

To create large paper flowers you will need:

  • Petal template. (Aura petal template). PDF template is great for printing it out and tracing, while SVG is used with cutting machines.
  • Cardstock paper (the best to use would be that thicker type of paper that is 65Lb-90Lb). Can be found in craft stores/ craft sections. My favorite brand is Recollections
  • Fast drying paper glue or even better – hot glue that is applied using hot glue gun. I recommend the Surebonder for mini, and AdTech for full size glue sticks. Notice that their tips are long and thin for great precision.
  • Sharp Scissors! Cardstock paper is rather thick so using old ones will make the whole process harder and yield petals with frayed edges – not pretty!

Happy crafting!

Shaping Paper Petals: Smooth Round Curl

Shaping Paper Petals – Smooth Round Curl. Quick video guide.

Shaping Paper Petals – Smooth Round Curl

In the following video I’m sharing a closer look at my favorite petal shaping technique that yields smooth shape without any creases.

Tools needed – Bone folder aka paper creaser. There are few different bone folders that you might want to try out – and the main difference would be the length and weight. I absolutely love my 8″ long and heavy bone folder, it works the best for the petal shaping technique in the video below.

8″ long heavy bone folder

6″ standard bone folder

On a flat surface, position the petal with it’s back side facing up. Place the bond folder closer to the petals base and with light pressure applied slide the petal with other hand.

Don’t push the bone folder too hard or you will leave a visible mark – this might take some practice but the result is worth it!

Paper Flower Petal Tutorial - 3 EASY WAYS OF SHAPING PAPER FLOWER PETALS WITH BONE FOLDER

Hello, everyone! In this quick and easy paper flower petal tutorial I’ll show you how to use bone folder (aka paper creaser) to give your paper petals that smooth and beautiful curve. This is an amazing tool that I use for many flowers I make. Bone folder is pretty versatile and truly wonderful – everyone can learn how to use it. Cheers!

1. Bone folder on top

I use it for shaping both large and small petals. However, for extra large petals I recommend using method N#3.

2. Bone folder behind the petal

Your thumb will slide along the petal – best used on smaller petals and petal stacks.

3. Placing the petal on flat surface

This method might seem a little bit tricky but it creates very smooth curves. Definitely usable on large petals when its hard to secure them with your thumb.

Visit this post to take a closer look on how to shape a petal without creases.

Bone folder is very useful not only for shaping paper petals but also for many other paper crafting related techniques – I will cover it in my upcoming articles.

Happy Crafting!

Paper Flower Guide with Pictures

Paper flowers are undeniably amazing decor for both our homes and all kind of events and celebrations. It’s something that we can keep for way way longer than any fresh cut flowers there are.
In this quick paper flower guide I will show you how to create a paper flower step-by-step, with some of my own tips and tricks.

MATERIALS

  • Thick paper – 67lb cover (or 175gsm) cardstock is one of the best choices, but going a little bit lower or higher won’t hurt. Try not to go over 110lb cover as the paper gets so thick it will crease easily.
  • Sharp scissors – and I really mean it! When cutting through several sheets of cardstock, you will have hard time with an old dull instrument.
  • Adhesive – ideally, hot glue is my go-to choice but any fast drying paper glue will do.
  • Bone folder to give the petals a smooth shape. As an alternative, you can use dull size of your scissors, thick marker or large hot glue stick.

LET’S DO IT

After getting all the necessary materials, next step would be to cut out the petals. For the flower we are making in this guide you will only need one shape, sized down a little bit for every next layer.

Prepare 6 petals for each layer. The sizes are absolutely custom – the main rule of thumb is to make every next layer 1-1.5 inches shorter 🙂 Say, to make this flower in 15-16 inches, take large petal 8.5″, next 7.5″ and finish with ~6″ one.

cut paper petals

Make approximately 1 ½ inch cut at every petal’s base.

Curl/Shape the petal with bone folder or any other tool of your choice. You can find a quick curling tutorial here.

Glue the tips together at an angle. Using a hexagon will help you spread the petals more evenly. You can even draw three guide lines for more precise application.

Glue down first layer of petals in a circle.

assembling paper flower

When the first layer is complete, it’s a good time to add a wire loop on the back if you plan to hang the flower rather than stick it with mounting tape.

Repeat adding next two petal layers.

After the base is complete, the only thing that’s left is the center.

Go wild here with your imagination – it’s the accent that will change whole flower’s look! Use fluffy fringes, add pearls or rhinestones, try mixing in some crepe paper or ready-made stamens from craft stores… The possibilities are truly endless, good luck and happy crafting!
